Jon Macaskill

Founder, Frogman Mindfulness

Jon Macaskill is a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness teacher and leadership coach. During his 24-year Navy career, he served in multiple highly dynamic leadership positions, from the battlefield to the operations center and the board room. Jon’s unconventional yet highly effective style of teaching leadership is fueled by his passion for helping people and organizations become the best versions of themselves. He takes what helped him excel in his professional life and heal in his personal life and now shares this through mindfulness coaching, resilience training, and keynote speaking, all to help others achieve their full potential.

John Salamone

Chief Human Resources Officer, U.S. House of Representatives

John Salamone serves as Chief Human Resources Officer for the Chief Administrative Officer of the House. Mr. Salamone joined the CAO in June 2016, bringing with him 17 years of federal government experience in both the executive and legislative branches. Prior to joining the CAO, Mr. Salamone led a team of consultants and oversaw a portfolio of HR-related projects at a management consulting firm in Alexandria, Virginia.

As Chief Human Resources Officer, Mr. Salamone oversees the human resources team and leads the CAO’s strategic and long term human resource planning. Mr. Salamone has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the State University of New York at Oswego and a master’s in Public Administration from George Mason University.

Garth Smelser

Faculty Chair, Mindful FED


Garth Katto Smelser is a mindfulness program manager and meditation teacher with a passion for cultivating personal and organizational wellness and resilience. He co-founded both Mindful NOAA and Mindful FED: first-of-their-kind federal mindfulness communities of practice. Garth has a rich and diverse background, having served as a US Naval Officer and federal leader in the US Forest Service and US Department of Commerce.

Garth’s meditation teaching journey began with the non-profit, Calmer Choice, helping bring mindfulness practices into grade schools, and Garth now serves as their Board’s Co-Chair. Garth trained to be a certified meditation instructor with the Engaged Mindfulness Institute. From students to senior executives, Garth has delivered hundreds of mindfulness trainings and presentations to thousands around the United States and Canada. Currently as the Mindful FED program manager, Garth is using his expertise in mindfulness and decades of government leadership experience to help leaders reimagine workplace wellbeing..
